RM Auctions at Monterey

By a happy coincidence I will be in California for the Monterey week. Unfortunately I will only be able to get there until Sunday 15th so will not be there in time for the RM auction (or possibly fortunately from the point of view of my wallet).

RM along with Gooding and Co, Mecum Russo and Steele, and Bonhams have bumper sales with RM adding a third day to get through all the lots consigned. There are mutterings on the internet that this is a case of sellers cashing in before a price crash in classic cars, be that as it may there certainly are an awful lot of ultra high end cars going under the hammer.

Ferrari 400 Superamerica at RM Auctions

In Ferrari terms many will associate the name Superamerica (SA) with the flip top version of the Ferrari 575. Back in the fifties and sixties there were a whole series of firstly America and later Superamerica models.  One of the feature lots, RM are offering this 400 SA Cabriolet (one of six in this body style) at their inaugural auction in Monaco.

Group IV Daytona at RM Monaco Auction

RM Auctions will hold their first auction in Monaco on the 1st of May to coincide with the Historic Grand Prix  the same weekend. The catalogue is extensive with a large collection of Rolls Royces and several significant Ferraris including a 400SA Cabriolet SWB, a LWB 250 California (currently owned by Chris Evans) and a 250SWB.

Not amongst the feature lots a Ferrari Daytona built to Group IV racing specifications caught my eye (can't think why).  Not one of the 15 original Competitzione cars the catalogue indicates this was coverted in period to competition specifications and has some competition history.  More recently the car has competed in the now sadly defunct Shell Ferrari Historic Challenge.

The catalogue estimates a price of between €420,000 and €480,000  and while current exchange rate fluctuations mean that where you live will have a baring in whether you think this is good value, it is safe to assume that this is considerably less than you would pay for an equivalent factory car, and would be huge fun at a non noise restricted track day.

Ferraris at the Amelia Island RM auction

RM auctions have released two videos on You tube of two of the Ferraris scheduled to go under the hammer this Saturday.

The first shows the Ferrari 365GTB/4 Daytona Spyder one of the 121 factory original cars and once owned be Edsel Ford. The car comes with Ferrari Classiche programme certification (which may or may not increase its value). Like all US spec Spyders the car is stamped as a GTB4 rather than a GTS4 possibly to circumvent type approval regulations at the time.
