Porsche 911 the Hunt goes on

You may have noticed I've not been blogging as much lately (but probably haven't). This has been for two reasons, firstly a worrying addiction to Forza Motorsport 3 on the Xbox, and secondly most of my remaining spare time has been spent time surfing the classifieds for a Porsche 911.

With the TT gone and a company car sitting on the drive, there is a need in my life for something that is both enjoyable to drive and more usable than the Daytona (which is probably not likely to come out of the garage before spring now unless we have some unseasonable warm weather.

The trouble with the 911 is there are some many versions to choose from and with the exception of the newest 997 and some of the classsic pre impact models all of the mainstream models can be brought for between £10,000 - £30,000.

So far I have eliminated the 996 and 964 not because they are bad cars but in both cases the shape leaves me a bit cold. I've looked at two 993's both low mileage C4's (I would prefer a C2 but the only one i have seen without intergalactic mileage was snapped up within 24 hours of appearing on pistonheads (for more than the owner originally asked for it). I think I'm going to try looking at a few 3.2s next (with the all important G50 gearbox), I quite fancy the idea of one of those and adding a few choice tweaks, the latest thought being to find a Super Sport verison (the 3.2 with the Turbo body) and removing the rear spoiler to give it a kind of pre impact S/T look but with an eighties twist. Obviously a few choice tweaks under the bonnet (or is it boot) wouldn't come a miss.

Anyway while I'm searching here is a reminder of what a 911 can be all about, Walter Rohrl competing in a historic rally in (what I assume) is a 2.7 Carrera RS around the Nurburgring. Enjoy. (Thanks to Martin Spain @martinspain for tweeting this).
