I'm pretty sure the organisers of the FIA GT series today would like to see entry lists and crowds the size of this 1971 Nurburgring 1000Km. 1971 was the second year of the famous battles between the immortal Porsche 917 and Ferrari 512. However by this time Ferrari had switched their attention to the 3.0 liter 312PB in time for the coming change to 3.0 engines for the 1972 season. Here however Porsche prefered to use the nimble 3.0 908/3 instead of the big 917. The Ferrari was the class of the field until engine problems sidelined it leading to a win for the Porsche 908/3 of Vic Elford and Gerard Larrouse. The work Ferrari put into the 312PB paid off however as the car utterly dominated the 1972 season winning 10 of 11 races (the one the one they didn't was Le Mans which they did not enter.
