911 vs the Batmobile
More period footage, this time featuring the Mighty BMW CSL Batmobiles racing against various types of Porsche 911 (mainly 934's and 935's) in the Seventies. Surprisingly, considering the size of the wings and tyres on these cars, how much they moved around compared to todays GT racers, but then the CSLs were alleged to have upwards of 750BHP in turbocharged form. The video features a very nice slow motion section of a Batmobile getting air.
The BMW's and Porsche's were the principal protagonists in the World Manufacturers Championship for cars built to the Group 5 formula for Silhouette cars which broadly look like their road going versions as opposed to the prototype Group 6 cars. Also in the footage of the Watkins Glen event there are various highly modified Corvettes. History is sort of repeating itself as notably in the ALMS series the BMW M3 GTR, Porsche 911 GT3 RSR and the Corvettes again compete. I doubt however that in 20 years time the modern racers will be as revered as the 935 and the Batmobile.
