In Ferrari terms many will associate the name Superamerica (SA) with the flip top version of the Ferrari 575. Back in the fifties and sixties there were a whole series of firstly America and later Superamerica models. One of the feature lots, RM are offering this 400 SA Cabriolet (one of six in this body style) at their inaugural auction in Monaco.
The last of the SA's the 400 sported a 4.0 litre V12 quoted at 340bhp (remember the larger 4 cam six carburettor Daytona engine is quoted at 352bhp). Hugely expensive when new only a handful of these cars were sold to the super rich in a variety of body styles. The best known of these are the Coupe Aerodynamica verisons which featured flowing coupe lines. In actual fact all the cars had detail differences and no two cars were exactly alike.
The styling is somewhat reminiscent of the similar period 250 Cabriolet and California Spyder, but the larger engined 400SA is intended to be a touring car. This particular example also sports a rather attractive removable hardtop.
Perhaps not one of the more iconic classic Ferraris, this is much more of a connoisseurs choice, and the perfect car for entry into Pebble Beach or Villa D'este concours.
